The OET (Occupational English Test) is designed specifically to assess the English language skills of healthcare professionals who wish to work in English-speaking environments. It is accepted in several countries for professional registration, including the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Dubai, Namibia, and Singapore.
OET evaluates all four language skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The test materials reflect common healthcare communication scenarios, ensuring relevance for healthcare professionals. OET is accepted for 12 healthcare professions, including nursing, medicine, pharmacy, and more.
The Listening sub-test consists of three parts, with a total of 42 questions. The audio material, lasting about 40 minutes, covers topics of general healthcare interest. You will hear each recording only once and must write your answers while listening.
The Speaking sub-test is conducted individually and takes around 20 minutes. In this section, you take on the role of a healthcare professional (e.g., a nurse, doctor, or pharmacist) and engage in role-plays with the interlocutor, who acts as a patient or client. The scenarios are tailored to your specific profession.
The Reading sub-test has three parts and 42 questions. You have 60 minutes to complete the test. The topics are of general healthcare interest, making them accessible to candidates from any healthcare profession.
The Writing sub-test assesses your ability to write a healthcare-related letter based on case notes. It’s important to select and organize the information effectively to inform the reader appropriately, rather than repeating everything from the case notes.
