Application Groups

Before starting the application process, you need to identify your Application Group. The NMBI recognizes three main groups:

• First Group – Trained as a general nurse or midwife in the European Union (EU) or European Economic Area (EEA).
• Second Group – Trained as a general nurse or midwife in the EU or EEA (general system), or trained in the EU/EEA in a division other than general nursing or midwifery.
• Third Group – Trained outside the EU or EEA (foreign nurse).

Group 3 Applicants

If you trained outside the EU or EEA, you fall under Group 3. To be eligible to apply for registration with NMBI, you must:

• Hold a current registration or license without restriction in the country where you qualified or practiced.
• If your nursing/midwifery program was completed more than five years ago, you must have practiced for at least 12 months within that five-year period.
• If you hold qualifications such as State Enrolled Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, Vocational Nurse, Nurse’s Aide, or Associate Degree (United States), you must have completed extra courses leading to first-level nurse registration.

Language Proficiency

Group 3 applicants must provide evidence of English language proficiency. NMBI accepts the following test results:

• International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic Test
• IELTS Academic Test for UKVI
• Occupational English Language Test (OET)
