The CGFNS (Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools) Certification Program is designed for first-level, general nurses educated and licensed outside the United States who wish to assess their chances of passing the U.S. NCLEX-RN exam and attain licensure to practice as registered nurses within the U.S.
The program consists of three parts:
Upon successful completion, the applicant is awarded a CGFNS Certificate.
To be eligible for the program, the nurse must be a first-level, general nurse as defined by the International Council of Nurses (ICN), holding both initial and current registration/licensure. First-level nurses are typically called registered or professional nurses, while second-level nurses, such as practical nurses or nurse assistants, are not eligible for the program.
General nurses must have both theoretical instruction and clinical practice in a variety of nursing areas. Nurses specialized in a single area without general nurse education or licensure are not eligible for the program.
